Birejik [Birecik] Sat 20. [20 May 1911] We left Urfa [Sanliurfa (Edessa)] on Friday morning. Our way lay through rolling country, partly cultivated and of no very great interest. It was diversified by our meeting many caravans of Aleppine muleteers with whom my men exchanged greetings and finally by meeting Meissner Pasha, who is at the head of the Baghdad rly construction, with 6 engineers, all going down to Baghdad on rly business. I knew he was on the road and when we met I stopped and told him who I was and we had a little talk - I wish it had been longer for I became deeply attached to him on the spot. However we made an appointment in Baghdad two years hence and he asked me to go and see his wife, who is in Aleppo [Halab], which I shall do. It has become really hot and this morning we set out before sunrise, while it was still cool. But we did not avoid heat, and it is still, at 6 PM, 87¯ in the shade. I do not mind it but it makes the horses languid. Birejik is the Zeugma, one of the most famous of the Euphrates passages. Here Crassus passed over the river to his defeat at Harran [Altinbasak (Carrhae)]: the eagles of the 5th legion turned backwards from the bridge of boats, but he would not heed the omen. The castle stands upon a high ridge of rock, long and narrow like a sword; the town lies clustered at its foot along the steep river bank to the south - a splendid place it is. I have pitched tents on the right bank of the Euphrates, for we have crossed and are now in Syria again. Tomorrow I go to Carchemish [Barak (Karkamis)] in the hope of finding Mr Hogarth there. Reports are various: Meissner Pasha said he had left, but here they tell me he is still at work. Anyway it's not much off my road to Aleppo.

Gertrude Margaret Lowthian Bell was born into a wealthy family at Washington New Hall in what was then County Durham. Initially home-schooled, she then attended school in London and graduated with a first-class degree in Modern History from Oxford University. Thereafter she travelled in Europe and also spent several months in Bucharest and in Tehran. Her travels continued with two round-the-world trips: one in 1897-1898 and one in 1902-1903. From the turn of the century, Gertrude developed a love of the Arab peoples - she learned their languages, investigated their archaeological sites and travelled deep into the desert. This intimate knowledge of the country and its tribes made her a target of British Intelligence recruitment during the First World War. At the end of the war, Gertrude focussed on the future of Mesopotamia and was to become a powerful force in Iraqi politics, becoming a kingmaker when her preferred choice, Faisal (son of Husain, the Sharif of Mecca and King of the Hijaz) was crowned King of the state of Iraq in August 1921.
Gertrude's first love remained archaeology and, as Honorary Director of Antiquities in Iraq, she established the Iraq Museum in Baghdad. Her 1905 expedition through the Syrian Desert to Asia Minor was published as The Desert and the Sown and her study, in 1907, of Binbirkilise on the Kara Dag mountain was published as The Thousand and One Churches and remains the standard work on early Byzantine architecture in Anatolia.

Birecik, 20 Mayıs Cumartesi. Cuma sabahı Urfa’dan (Edessa) ayrıldık. Yolumuz, yer yer ekili arazilerden başka ilgi çekici bir şey bulunmayan bu ülke boyunca uzanıyordu. Yolculuk, yolda karşılaştığımız birbirini selamlayan Halepli katır kervanlarıyla ve Meissner Paşa* ile çeşitlendi. Bağdat demiryolu inşaatının şefi olan Meissner Paşa, yanında 6 diğer mühendisle Bağdat’a çalışmaya gidiyordu. Onun yolda olduğunu biliyordum. Karşılaştığımız zaman kendisini durdurdum ve kendimi tanıtarak biraz sohbet ettim. Ona oracıkta hemen bağlandım. Keşke bu konuşma daha uzun sürseydi. Her neyse iki yıl sonra Bağdat’ta görüşmek üzere ayrıldık. Benden Halep’teki karısını görmemi istedi. Göreceğim. Hava çok ısındı. Sabah güneş doğmadan, hava henüz serinken yola çıktık. Ama güneşten kaçamadık, şu an sıcaklık gölgede 30 derece. Atların bile halsizleşmesine anlam veremiyorum. Zeugma – Birecik, en ünlü Fırat geçitlerinden biridir. Crassus** Harran’daki (Altinbasak - Carrhae) yenilgisine buradan yürüdü: 5. lejyonun kartalları botların köprülerinden geri çevrildi. Ama o kehaneti dikkate almadı. Kale, yüksek bir kayanın sırtına oturtulmuş. Bir kılıç gibi uzun ve dar. Şehir, kalenin güneyinde ayakları boyunca ve nehir kıyısında kümelenmiş. Muhteşem bir yer. Çadırları Fırat’ın sağ taraf kıyısına kurdum. Şu an tekrar Suriye’deyiz. Yarın Mr. Hogarth’ı bulmak amacıyla Carchemish’e (Barak - Karkamış) gidiyorum. Raporlar çeşitli: Meissner Paşa orayı terk ettiğini söylemişti. Ama burada hala çalıştığını söylediler. Her neyse Halep’e fazla yolum kalmadı…
